Master’s Program

The Master’s Program curriculum synthesizes both the theory behind and the practical applications of e-learning. In this course, students earn a minimum of 34 credits in a variety of subjects, including 13 mandatory courses, at least 6 credits from a selection of 21 elective courses, and 2 introductory courses of each student’s choosing.

Beyond the main curriculum of the “Four I’s” centered on Instructional Design (ID), RCiS also provides General Courses that link research with practical work in the field, as well as Specialized Courses to strengthen the specialized knowledge and skills required for each student’s field of study.

Students examine real-world e-learning programs and learn how to analyze and propose numerous ways to improve them from an assigned perspective. Students are introduced to a broad overview of e-learning, and develop an understanding of its related subjects, including instructional design; education and learning theory; Internet and media technology; project management; and relevant laws and regulations, thereby developing an understanding of the factors to consider when developing an effective e-learning program.

教育心理学 Syllabus

Mandatory / Elective		Elective	Credits	A course in which students engage in a self-guided exploration of the psychological methods used to improve education, and learn how to use these methods themselves. First, students acquire an overview of educational psychology. Second, students summarize the “three main domains of educational psychology” in the context of Fundamental Educational Theory, and practice how to apply this knowledge and its implications in order to improve educational projects. Third, students study the ARCS model and the theories underpinning it, thereby becoming familiar with processes for using psychological knowledge to improve education, and obtain further hints as to how to apply this knowledge themselves. Finally, students synthesize all of the knowledge they have gained to create their own proposal for improving education using psychology.

Mandatory / Elective		Elective	Credits	A course that teaches basic programming skills using network technology as a means of converting various types of Internet servers into educational tools. First, students learn the basic concepts of the TCP/IP framework and how to write an elementary network program in C. Here, students also learn how to construct environments for network programming through practice using actual equipment. Next, students learn about various development environments and programming techniques used to create programs that can provide interactive content and dynamic data processing. Finally, students learn how to construct and operate servers capable of this dynamic data processing by actually constructing working prototypes. Mandatory / Elective		Mandatory	Credits	A course in which students, under the instruction of a faculty advisor, continue to develop the research on the theme chosen in Special Research I towards the goal of completion of a master’s thesis or a final research project. Through the Special Research I and II set of courses, students gain the skills necessary to act independently as a professional in their field and learn how to utilize those skills, and produce a thesis or research paper that has the requisite high level of creativity, impartiality, and persuasiveness befitting such a professional.

Prerequisite Course : Basic Information Processing Theory
Mandatory / Elective		Elective	Credits	A course that teaches the skills necessary for students to design information literacy courses, training programs, or e-learning suited to the needs of their own universities or companies. Students learn the merits, problems, concerns, and points to consider when implementing e-learning in information literacy training through real-world examples, in order to learn how to utilize such e-learning at their own university or company.

外国語教育におけるｅラ–ニング Syllabus

Prerequisite Course : Instructional Design I
Mandatory / Elective		Elective	Credits	A course in which students select their choice of e-learning, analyze it from an assigned perspective, and propose ways to improve that program. Through this, students learn how to design an effective course that suits the needs of their target audience. This course also covers foreign language learning methods, second language acquisition theory, assessment, learning management and assistance, and the points that must be observed to create effective and appealing e-learning programs in the field of foreign language education.

Mandatory / Elective		Elective	Credits	A course that cultivates the basic knowledge for conceptualizing, planning, and considering company and worker education. Students learn about the history of the many forms of company education in Japan, the theory behind establishing new functions in company education in terms of instructional design, evaluation methodology, competency management, and use of corporate universities versus internal educational services for developing human resources, all while observing real examples of e-learning implementation at cutting-edge companies.

Mandatory / Elective		Elective	Credits	A course that teaches the skills necessary for utilizing e-learning at institutions of higher education. Students discuss how to utilize e-learning depending on the learners’ locations, synchronicity, and subjects of study, while looking at real-world examples to understand considerations like the conference of academic credits, the necessary features for implementation, and other special considerations in the field.

Mandatory / Elective		Elective	Credits	A course that cultivates an understanding of the current status of e-learning in Japan and abroad, with a focus on the implementation of e-learning in sites of international cooperation, particularly in regards to courses related to human resource development. This class is conducted entirely in English.

医療教育におけるｅラ–ニング Syllabus

Prerequisite Course : –
Mandatory / Elective		Elective	Credits	A course that teaches the skills necessary to plan education using a systematic approach for medical staff education. Students examine real-world examples of e-learning used at companies involved in medical settings, such as pharmaceutical companies, and e-learning targeted at medical workers such as doctors, medical students, and nurses. Students analyze case studies from the designated theoretical perspectives such as instructional design, performance management, education, and learning, in order to learn methods for developing more effective and efficient proposals for education at their own medical organization.
