[Task 6] Discussion Board: Case analysis(Sample for open course)

Although we encountered some problems as highlighted on Session 2 on my first e-Learning experience, bearing in mind that e-learning was at its infant stage at the University of the South Pacific in 2004, I think introduction of e-learning was one of the University strategies in terms of cost cutting measures. Benefit 1 of e-Learning would be relevant in this case as e-Leaning lower costs. (Rosenberg, 2002).

Secondly, since e-Learning is on 24/7, we have excess to the internet at anytime from home or at work. This is compared to face to face learning where we had to rush to class during peak traffic hours.

On the other hand, since e-Learning was new to the University of the South Pacific at that time, and the unit ‘IS 121’ was conducted on a blended mode, I would disagree to some contents with benefits 2, 3 and 4. I remembered in 2009 when I was doing one of my Post Graduate units through online learning, I experienced a lot of changes and improvement since 2004. Our course contents were available on time and dependable.

Furthermore, I highlighted in Session 2 that there was less interaction amongst students because most of us were not aware of how to use the discussion forums and had difficulties in navigating through the course contents. This was mainly due to e_learning being new and most of the students lack computer skills.

Hi A-san,

I noticed that you mentioned about taking 'IS121', I believe this is an Information Systems course related to IT. What were the entry conditions or prereqisites and objectives for this course since you mentioned students lacked computer skills in a previous postings?

I would be interested to know how the benefits affected your own learning experience. And could you elaborate more on your disagreement with points 2, 3 and 4?

Could the reason for less interaction because of the questions or activities?
