Reflecting on the law course that I assisted in overseeing at the University of the South Pacific (USP), it was easy to identify the areas which fell under McGregor’s motivational Theory X and Theory Y based on some of the feedback from students, when they posted their feelings on discussion boards. Due to the enthusiasm of the lecturer it was also easy to identify some of the 30 indicators for creating a positive learning environment, however this is probably a significant factor when the lecturer is interested in their online course (despite some of the technical problems).

When looking at Theory X which seemed to be based on the negative nature of a learner’s motivation or lack of it, it could be identified amongst some of the students when they complained on the class discussion forum or they are simply familiar with directed teaching. At times the lecturer would try to find out why some students were not active in the forums or had not submitted assignments. They were simply unfamiliar with the type of learning. However over time the students did get a grasp of learning online and collaborating with others due to the tasks that were created for students to work through.

As an observer I would say that the students were not against doing the work or exercise, but it was apparent that some were a bit impatient with readings or case studies that were almost 30 pages long. There was an issue with uploading files which took too long in their country or campus. This had put a dent on some learners’ motivation and the lecturer did try to solve the issue promptly, to have the files available at their campus. The lecturer did still need to check on the students’ progress daily since he understood students not being familiar and needed extra support and direction. However, towards the end of the course students seemed to ask less questions towards the lecturer and were able to collaborate effectively with other students.

This leads to Theory Y, which is quite positive and reflects this law course since the majority of the students were motivated to learn and carry out the required tasks. The exercises were designed to encourage creativity and to reflect on current affairs. Students were to make arguments based on facts and the law, which seemed quite interesting, and students did enjoy these sessions, even if it were asynchronous, as students awaited the others’ response eagerly. This positive environment was created in allowing Theory Y students to excel since they have the attitude and motivation to learn independently or collaboratively, but also to allow Theory X type students to be encouraged to learn through continuous support till they were confident enough to learn with less supervision.

I think one of the profound aspects of the course which the lecturer ensured was followed was to be professional and respectful of other students’ views. He made sure that in group work that members were from different countries and backgrounds and of age and gender. He also asked that students put a picture of them self as their avatar, and not of some Hollywood star or scenery. He wanted to build trust amongst his students which seemed to work in creating a good learning environment.
