◆History of Media Research◆

First of all, let's look at trends of researches on educational media. I would like you to read the paper about the history of educational media research shown in "Introduction," by downloading it below. Hiroo Saga, before moving to Edogawa University, was a professor at the National Institute of Multimedia Education and a senior to me when I was studying at the college. He held workshops on media education (learning as to media) and related themes, and disclosed on the Web his research on Buson Yosano, a hike poet in the Edo period, that he carries out for both academic inquiry and pleasure.

Note for English Edition: Listed below is available only in Japanese, so you may skip to the next page, where History of Media in Education is covered briefly by Prof. Suzuki, which is not as good as that of Prof. Saga, but it would be okay (Less readings!).

Required Readings for Japanese students
(by Hiroo Saga@ a professor at the National Institute of Multimedia Education)
  • Educational Media Science Course of FY2001: Session 2 Research on media effect (Fri. Oct. 26, 2001)
Texts for downloading (Word, 184KB, 11 pages of A4 paper) [In Japanese] (broken link)

  • Paper surveying educational media research on media concepts, media comparison research, an aptitude treatment interaction and media attributes
Slides for downloading (PPT, 407KB, 28 pieces of slides) [In Japanese] (broken link)

  • Lecture video (52min., RAM format) (broken link)
I recommend it to those who want to study using listening materials. The relevant part appears 12 minutes after the start of the movie (demonstration) in a FlipBook format.

Substitute material when you cannot access the materials above.
  • Educational Media Science Course: Session 2 - History of educational media research and media education (Apr. 21, 2000)[In Japanese] (broken link)

This is a thesis surveying educational media research concerned with media comparison researches, an aptitude treatment interaction and media attributes. Although there are no charts inserted, you can understand it easily when you view the "presentation slides" at the same time. Although the site says "it is recorded on streaming video," I'm afraid the link no longer works.
Video for reference
Hiroo Saga, 65 minutes 36 seconds (Slide synchronization type): a substitute for the lecture video of the designated thesis

  • "An effect of media utilization and media literacy" Education Promotion Conference of Kaijo area, Chiba Prefecture
(Slides synchronized to videos; It takes a long time to play)

He gives a lecture about an effect of media utilization in the first half and media literacy in the second half. He talks about the content of the designated thesis for 25 minutes in the first half. For those who want to learn by listening, even watching only the first half will be useful.
