Basic Operation of the OS (Windows XP)

Learn about how to start and shut down a computer (PC)

Before Starting a PC

Keep in mind that a PCcould be damagedif it is not shut down using the correct procedure.
After using a PC, be sure to shut it down (shutdown).
If you leave it running, someone could surreptitiously look at it or access your important personal data.

Grip the mouse lightly with your thumb, ring finger, and little finger to move it.
Put your index finger and middle finger lightly on the left button and right button respectively.
After moving the mouse, perform a movement called a click or a double click.
　「“Click” 」
　　　→Press (press, click) the button on the left once (push and then quickly release the button, do not hold the button down)
　「“Double click”」
　　　→Press the button on the left twice consecutively with a quick movement (click, click)
Dragging is also one of the movements of a mouse
　「“Drag”」
　　　→Select a point in the document and then hold down the button on the left while moving the mouse at the same time to select the text you want.
　「“Drag and drop”」
　　　→Select a point in the document and then hold down the button on the left while moving the mouse at the same time to select the text you want then drag the text with the mouse to the position you want to move it to and release the button.
The mouse pointer (an “arrow” shaped mark that moves along with the mouse movement)functions only at its tip.
　(Example) To click (or drag) the title bar (see below)

Wait until the image “Welcome to Windows” below is displayed,

Press the Delete key with the “Ctrl (control)” key and “Alt (alternative)” key held down

When the “Log on to Windows” screen is displayed,

・Enter your user name and password into the “User name (U):” and “Password (P):” fields, respectively.

Click the OK button
Wait for a while until the desktop is displayed as shown below. This may take time.

Click on the “Start” menu in the bottom left corner of the screen,

Move the mouse to the menu displayed, and select “Shutdown”

Press the arrow on the right in the window displayed and select “Shutdown”
(No need to select it if it is already selected)
