Theme:Technology-Enhanced Language Learning: Challenges and Opportunities

Date:10:30am to 12:30 am, May 29, 2021 (JST)

Presenters:Dr. Yoshiko Goda (Associate Professor, Kumamoto University Research Center for Instructional Systems, Japan), Dr. Willy Renandya (Principal Lecturer, National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore), Dr. Fei Victor Lim (Assistant Professor, National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore)

Venue:Online (Zoom)

Outline:

This webinar explores the implications of the “digital turn” on the teaching of languages, particularly English. Advancements in digital technologies offer many opportunities to improve the teaching and learning of languages. Digital technologies invite teachers to rethink their pedagogies and explore alternative ways in which to design students’ learning experiences. We discuss the opportunities offered by and the challenges of technology-enhanced language learning across three talks.

In the first talk, Dr. Yoshiko Goda will discuss ways to integrate theory, practice, and technology for the effective use of technology for language learning. She will share case studies that bridge self-regulated learning and computer-supported collaborative learning, which enabled both student input and output to contribute to develop language proficiency.

In the second talk, Dr Fei Victor Lim will present on ‘Designing Learning with Technology’. He will share the considerations in using digital technologies well for learning by reflecting on the possibilities they bring for knowledge representations and how they shape the pedagogic interactions between teachers and students.

In the final talk, Dr Willy Renandya will discuss key language learning principles and explore how these principles can be productively applied to enrich students’ language learning experience in technologically-mediated lessons. When students are engaged in this way, they can be expected to acquire more language and further develop their language proficiency.
